Preparing Your Garden for Fall

As any gardener knows, preparing your garden for fall is a crucial task. Failing to do so can result in lost crops, damaged plants, and an overall decrease in the health of your garden. However, with a little bit of planning and preparation, you can ensure that your garden makes it through the colder months unscathed.

Clear Up Dead Foliage

One of the most important things you can do to prepare your garden for fall is to remove any dead or dying plants. These plants can provide a safe harbor for pests and diseases, which can then spread to healthy plants. In addition, removing dead plants helps to tidy up the garden and make it look more presentable. To remove dead plants, simply cut them down at the base and dispose of them in the trash. If you have a compost pile, you can also add them to that.

Prune Trees and Shrubs

Another important task to do in fall is to prune your trees and shrubs. This helps to encourage new growth in the spring and can also help to control the size of your plants. When pruning, be sure to remove any dead or dying branches. You should also cut back any overgrown branches. Be careful not to over-prune, however, as this can damage your plants.

Clean Up With a Garden Shed

If you have lots of gardening equipment, you don’t want to leave it out in the elements all winter long. Be sure to clean it up and store it in a shed or other shelter. This will help to prolong the life of your equipment and keep it from rusting or becoming damaged. Our garden sheds at Heritage Building Co. are the perfect way to keep your gardening equipment organized and protected from the elements.
